Field note · September 2026
The page used to win. Now the entity does.
SEO trained a generation of marketers to think in pages: one URL, one keyword, one ranking. AI search doesn't think in pages. It thinks in entities — is this a real, well-defined business, with a consistent identity across the sources a model has already read, that can be named with confidence?
That's a different fight. A business can have a beautifully optimized page and still be an unclear entity — its name spelled three ways across directories, its offering described differently on its own site than on review platforms, no consistent digital paper trail tying the claims together. A model faced with that ambiguity does the safe thing: it cites someone else instead.
You don't out-rank a page anymore. You out-clarify a competitor's identity.
The businesses winning citations right now aren't necessarily the ones with the most content. They're the ones whose "who we are and what we do" reads the same everywhere a model might encounter it — their site, their listings, press mentions, structured data, even client case studies. Sameness, repeated, is what builds the confidence a language model needs before it will put your name in an answer.
This is also why the market is moving so fast right now. Businesses adopting this kind of work are already seeing real, measurable lift — one widely cited 2026 dataset puts it at +40% visibility and over four times more qualified traffic. The ones waiting for the "AI SEO" hype to settle are the ones an unclear entity will keep losing to.
